One of the awaited highlights in the organization’s agenda each year must be the mixed netball tournament. The games this time took place on April 12th at the Kelburn tennis court, just like past years. The permitting weather led to the games starting at 9.30am with preceding briefing by the organizing committee.
This year’s event saw eight teams participating, almost all with amusing names and zealous netballers. The interesting element every time must be the involvement and skills shown by male players, some of whom reflected even more enthusiasm despite netball traditionally being more of a ‘ladies’ game. Perhaps that no longer stood after the tournament that Saturday.
All eight teams were first divided into two groups, namely A and B. Each team consisted of 10-11 players, a mix of seniors and juniors, girls and boys. Winners of each group then went to the final round which only ended later that afternoon.
The champion of the day was Gelimat, whose team captain was Fatin Abdul Rahman. All members were given a chance to showcase their talents, leading to victory for this team in white. Gelimat won the final game against team Sukahati. Equally competitive team Nasi Ayam Suree took the third prize home and Straw-hat Pirates won fourth place. A tight competition was going on as the final round ended with a score difference of one.
As for the best player award, Muhamad Irizul Syah or famously known as Mawi was given the title after scoring 3 out of his 5 tries. Those who observed certainly noticed his techniques especially when shooting a goal.
More importantly, not only did players turn up, the event also saw a very big number of WMSO members coming to render their support and assistance. In addition to that, the F&B team again made good business whilst providing players hunger busters. A lot could be said about the success of WMSO Mixed Netball 2008. Unquestionably, it was everyone’s contribution that made it so.
